Booster FAQs

The following is to be used as a resource to help clarify any questions you may have in regard to remaining compliant with your support of Maverick Athletics.  This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list.  Please contact a member of the Compliance Department if you should need further assistance.

Q. What is considered "recruiting"?
A. Recruiting is any solicitation of the prospect or the prospect's family (or guardian) by an institutional staff member or by a representative of teh institution's athletics interest for the purpose of securing the prospect's enrollment and ultimate participation in the institutions' intercollegiate athletic program.

Q. How long is a prospective student-athlete considered to be a prospect?
A. A prospective student-athlete remains a prospect even after committing to or signing a National Letter of Intent with Minnesota State University or any institution, and both the institution and the prospect continue to be governed by NCAA recruiting legislation regarding prospects until the prospect reports for regular squad practice or the prospect attends his/her first day of classes in any regular semester.

Q. Can a representative of athletics interest (booster) be involved when a prospect is on an official or unofficial visit?

A. No.  Boosters are precluded from all recruiting activities, including face-to-face contacts with a prospect or his/her relatives at any time.

Q. Can boosters contact prospects to encourage them to attend Minnesota State?
A. No.  Any such contact could result in the prospect being declared ineligible to participate in athletics at MSU.

Q. May a booster engage in evaluation activities on behalf of the institution?
A. A booster may view a prospect's contest on his/her own initiative, provided no contact is made with the prospect or his/her family.  However, this evaluation may not take place at the request or direction of any MSU staff member and a booster is not permitted to contact anyone associated with the prospect in an effort to evaluate him/her.

Q. May a booster attend a public event (e.g., high school awards banquet or dinner) at which prospects are in attendance?
A. Yes.  However, contact with the prospects or their families may not occur, and no attempt can be made to recruit the prospect.

Q. May a student-athlete's name, picture, or appearance be used in a promotional activity?
A. It depends on the situation and pre-approval MUST be made by the MSU Compliance Office.  Failure to obtain pre-approval for student-athlete involvement in promotional activities jeopardizes the eligibility of the student-athlete.  Please complete the promotional activity request document found on the booster page of the compliance website.
